Dennis Stock — James Dean

Presented in Partnership with Magnum Photos

Magnum photographer Dennis Stock met James Dean in Hollywood in January 1955 and, intrigued, began to photograph him. Following him on a visit to his birthplace in Fairmount, Indiana, to New York City, and back to Hollywood, Stock recorded unforgettable images of the young actor in both his professional and private worlds.

Stock’s photographs of Dean capture the spirit and humor of an extremely talented man who represented the youth, awareness, and vitality of a generation. From shots of Dean sharing a flirtatious smile to intimate vignettes of his return to Fairmount and classic portraits of him walking the rainy streets of New York City, Stock reveals Dean as we will always remember him - including a shocking and tragically ironic series of photographs of the actor as he climbed into a coffin - for, within months of when the picture was taken, Dean would be dead.
