Magnum Contact Sheets
Presented in Partnership with Magnum Photos
Presenting a remarkable selection of contact sheets and related material by more than 60 Magnum photographers, Magnum Contact Sheets lays bare the creative methods, strategies and editing processes behind some of the world’s most iconic images. Addressing key questions of photographic practice — was the final image a set-up or a serendipitous encounter? Did the photographer work to extract the potential from a situation or was it the fabled ‘decisive moment’?
Many of photography’s greats are included such as Eve Arnold, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Elliott Erwitt and Inge Morath, as well as those from Magnum’s younger generations. The exhibition covers more than 70 years of history, from the Normandy landings by Robert Capa, the Paris riots of 1968 by Bruno Barbey and Martin Parr’s landmark 1980s series, The Last Resort to images of the Beatles by David Hurn, Miles Davis by Guy Le Querrec, Martin Luther King Jr. by Leonard Freed and Salvador Dalí by his long-time collaborator, Philippe Halsman.
